Some small changes I made to Windows XP after installation.
First of all, do run Windows Updater. In my experience, it keeps on finding updates for days and days on end.

ZIP files are Potential Security Risks
If you click on a ZIP file on a shared disk, windows shows a pop up, entitle "Windows Explorer" with the text "This page has an unspecified potential security risk. Would you like to continue?".
Of course, this is bullshit (Explorer, "page", "unspecified risk"?), but alas, it's Windows, so no surprises there. Windows considers all files on a shared image as "pages" in the "trusted site", and by default displays this messages for "pages" in "trusted sites".
Disable this message as follows.
- Open Internet Explorer
- Select "Internet Options" from the "Tools" menu
- In the "Security" tab, select the "Trusted Sites"
- Click "Custom Level..."
- Find "Launching applications and unsafe files", and change "Prompt" to "Enable".
